(Not) Getting Married Today - Madeline Kahn - Company

In honor of Valentine’s Day and Single Awareness Day, the delightful Madeline Kahn…

“Listen, everybody, look, I don’t know what you’re waiting for, a wedding, what’s a wedding, it’s a prehistoric ritual where everybody promises fidelity forever, which is maybe the most horrifying word I ever heard of, which is followed by a honeymoon, where suddenly he’ll realize he’s saddled with a nut, and wanna kill me, which he should…”

The Wiz - Emerald City Sequence

Finally reaching the Emerald City (an analogue of the real-life World Trade Center Plaza), the quintet gain passage into the city because of Dorothy’s ownership of the silver shoes and marvel at the spectacle of the city and its dancers. Dorothy and her friends gain an audience with the Wizard (Richard Pryor), who appears to them as a giant fire-breathing metallic head.

The scenes filmed at the Emerald City were elaborate, utilizing six hundred fifty dancers, three hundred eighty-five crew members and twelve hundred costumes. Costume designer Tony Walton enlisted the help of high fashion designers in New York City for the Emerald City sequence, and obtained exotic costumes and fabric from designers such as Oscar de la Renta and Norma Kamali.

Quincy Jones was the musical supervisor and music producer for the film. He later wrote that he initially did not want to work on the film, but did it as a favor to Sidney Lumet, the director. The film production marked Quincy Jones’ first time working with Michael Jackson, and Jones would later produce three hit albums for Jackson. Jones recalled working with Jackson as one of his favorite experiences from The Wiz, and spoke of Jackson’s dedication to his role, comparing his acting style to Sammy Davis, Jr.

Thelma Carpenter - He’s The Wizard

Dorothy (Diana Ross) meets The Munchkins’ main benefactress, Miss One, the Good Witch of the North (played by Thelma Carpenter), a magical “numbers runner” who gives Evermean’s powerful silver slippers to Dorothy. However, the frightened Dorothy desperately wants to get home. Miss One urges her to follow the Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City and the find the mysterious “Wizard” who Miss One believes holds the power to send Dorothy back to Harlem.

The 1978 film The Wiz was directed by Sidney Lumet and written by Joel Shumacher with music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls. The scene here depicting Munchkinland was the site of the decaying New York Sate Pavillion from the 1964 New York World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park located in Queens, New York.

Along with the Emerald City scene (see here) filmed entirely at the World Trade Center, this scene is one of my favorites from the movie.

7 Things: Kristin Chenoweth

The Broadway actress and author of a new memoir, “A Little Bit Wicked”, talks about her Christianity habit, why she feels for the Jolie-Pitts, and how gays beat girls.

Rent - Rehearsal @ Hollywood Bowl

Wow! Directed by Neil Patrick Harris! Cool beans!

Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison – 2010 Tony Awards

Lea sings ‘Don’t Rain on My Parade’ from Funny Girl and Matthew sang ‘All I Need Is The Girl’ from Gypsy. Lea kills it! Shazzam all over that!

Robin de Jesus - La Cage Aux Folles
Some of you may remember Robin when he made his Broadway debut as Sonny in the Broadway musical In the Heights back in 2008. But I soooo remember him from the movie Camp (2003) when he played Michael Flores, the openly gay student who gets beaten up for dressing in drag at his junior prom.
This year, Robin is of course nominated for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical for his role as the sassy servant Jacob. Hope he wins! He def shazzamed that role!

I of course am excited for the Tonys in general, but THIS is the only win I REALLY want to see.  LOVE.

The Shazzamity

Shazzamity in a nut shell. Pigeon posts are often found here. It's a love/hate thing. As well your typical commentary on the contributions our society makes to music, fashion, film, and television. It's pomp and circumstance, y'all! The shazzamity starts here. I'll even punch that pigeon in the face if I have to. (Please note: No actual pigeons were harmed in the making of this blog.)
