Tori Amos - Me and a Gun
“Me and a Gun” is a song by American singer-songwriter and musician Tori Amos. It was released as the first single from her debut studio album Little Earthquakes. This song did not take off very well as a single, possibly given its serious subject matter; in fact, the track was not the A-side to its own single.
The song was inspired by a rape that occurred in LA when Tori was 21. After she performed at a bar, a patron asked her if he could have a ride home. She obliged, and he raped her at knifepoint (many journalists mistakenly state she was raped at gunpoint, possibly due to the song’s title). She escaped. Years later, in London, Amos saw the film Thelma & Louise and was stirred. On the way to a show, she wrote the song in her head. That night, she performed the song a capella.
Tori Amos explains the experience:
“I’ll never talk about it at this level again but let me ask you. Why have I survived that kind of night, when other women didn’t”, she says. “How am I alive to tell you this tale when he was ready to slice me up? In the song I say it was ‘Me and a Gun’ but it wasn’t a gun. It was a knife he had. And the idea was to take me to his friends and cut me up, and he kept telling me that, for hours. And if he hadn’t needed more drugs I would have been just one more news report, where you see the parents grieving for their daughter”. “And I was singing hymns, as I say in the song, because he told me to. I sang to stay alive. Yet I survived that torture, which left me urinating all over myself and left me paralyzed for years. That’s what that night was all about, mutilation, more than violation through sex”. “I really do feel as though I was psychologically mutilated that night and that now I’m trying to put the pieces back together again. Through love, not hatred. And through my music. My strength has been to open again, to life, and my victory is the fact that, despite it all, I kept alive my vulnerability”.
“I don’t talk about the details because I can’t, but it’s freeing to sing that song [Me And A Gun]. I have to go in a trance to sing it… It gets exhausting singing it. But there’s so much going on that nobody talks about, and I just found that out with myself after so many years of not talking.”

happy birthday post for one of my favourite artists ever. Her music has helped me through so much in my life.
Happy 48th birthday Tori Amos!
Tori Amos - Night of Hunters “The protagonist is a woman who finds herself in the dying embers of a relationship. In the course of one night she goes through an initiation of sorts that leads her to reinvent herself allowing the listener to follow her on a journey to explore complex musical and emotional subject matter. One of the main themes explored on this album is the hunter and the hunted and how both exist within us.”

“With Night of Hunters, Tori Amos carries on the classical tradition of variations on a theme: taking inspiration from classical forms to create a bold new work while paying tribute to the mastery of the original compositions…”

Samantha James - Rain
“When it’s hard to find your way home / Just keep this in mind / If you live inside the moment / You’ll know love’s a light…”
“When Samantha James established her music style she began writing songs for her debut album Rise together with Sebastian Arocha Morton. Her friend Dave Curtain, discussed with Samantha what would be a good label for Samantha’s music and came up with Om Records.
When they contacted the label and send them a demo of her song “Rise”, she was signed on to a single deal. Shortly after that they signed on “Angel Love” as well. After that she was signed to do a full-length album. Samantha said in a interview that her biggest inspiration was her mother who passed away when Samantha was 13 years old. The album was a two year process and the title track from the album reached #1 on the US Billboard Dance charts.”

Gotye - The Only Way
“All the things you thought / You came here for / Everything you thought / You knew for sure / No meandering / No more wondering / Everything is true…”
As Gotye, many of Wally De Backer’s songs are based on snippets of old vinyl records and cassettes, used to create mosaics and blends of found sounds and live instruments. Reportedly, “the trove of ancient music is the legacy of his former neighbour, an old woman who passed away back in 2000 and whose late husband hoarded dusty platters.” he has described his work as “99% sample-based from old sources, like vinyl, DVDs, CDs and tapes, all cobbled together and stretched to sound seamless.”
BT feat. Tori Amos - Blue Skies (Rabbit In The Moon’s Phatomless Mix)
“Blue skies are in my head / Said, blue skies are up ahead…”
“Blue Skies” is a song by BT with featured vocals by Tori Amos. Released as a single in the UK in October 1996, it hit number one on the US Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart in January 1997. “Blue Skies” also appears on the Party of Five soundtrack.
BT was responsible for remixing “Talula (BT’s Synethasia Mix)” on Tori’s Talula singles released in the UK and US. Tori returns the favor here appearing prominently on BT’s single, “Blue Skies.”

Garbage - Only Happy When It Rains (Alternative Remix)
“I’m only happy when it rains / I’m only happy when it’s complicated / And though I know you can’t appreciate it / I’m only happy when it rains…”
“Only Happy When It Rains” was a single released from Garbage’s 1995 self-titled debut album. It became Garbage’s breakthrough single in the UK, where it became the first Garbage single to chart in the Top 40.
In 1996, “Only Happy When It Rains” was released worldwide. In the US, it charted strongly in the Billboard Hot 100, and propelled the album into the Top 100 of the Billboard 200 for the first time since it’s August, 1995 release.
Shirley Manson of Garbage explains: “[The song] is a dig at ourselves because we like records that don’t make us feel very happy, and at this so-called ‘alternative’ scene of ‘we’re so weird and more wonderful than everybody else’.”

Shazzamity in a nut shell. Pigeon posts are often found here. It's a love/hate thing. As well your typical commentary on the contributions our society makes to music, fashion, film, and television. It's pomp and circumstance, y'all! The shazzamity starts here. I'll even punch that pigeon in the face if I have to. (Please note: No actual pigeons were harmed in the making of this blog.)
