Day of the Dead - Ofrendas
Today, on November 2nd, people celebrate the return of their “dearly departed” who, as ethereal souls, come back for one day to their burial place and the home where they once lived. In many homes, a ritual altar (ofrenda) is prepared to honor the returning souls. The altars can be attractively adorned with Zempasuchitl, a kind of marigold that is the traditional flower of the dead. There is incense and a candle to light the way for each returning soul. Food and beverages are prepared, and always the living serve the dishes that the dead were fondest of in life. It is believed that the dead partake of the food in spirit, after which the living eat it.
