Day of the Dead - Dia de los Muertos According to tradition, the souls of our ancestors return on November 2nd each year to enjoy, for a few brief hours, the pleasure they once knew in life. El Dia de los Muertos is a national holiday in Mexico and celebrated throughout most of Latin America. Figures of skulls and skeletons appear everywhere, their dance of death mimicking the living. In small towns or villages, many households prepare a table on which offerings of food and drink for the dead are set amongst flowers and candles. Death has a unique persona throughout Latin America that is not found anywhere else in the world. In pre-Hispanic cultures, death was just a further step in life. Life and death complemented each other. With the introduction of Catholicsm, attention was no longer focused on Death, but rather on the dead or spirits. Today we honor our ancestors and our dearly departed on this most special day. Feliz Dia De Los Muertos!
